Dilute Calico - Nina - Small - Young - Female - Cat
On December 6th, 2012 I received this email from my pal Sarah Reece: I hope you've had a good holiday season so far! Again I have to ask for your help--I have a beautiful calico who tested positive for feline leukemia. She was found huddled underneath a car at night, way out in the country, purring as much as she could, but clearly miserable--she has an upper respiratory infection and ear mites and pretty bad diarrhea--her feet and rear end were just coated. She never stopped purring and was kneading the air as we bathed her and rubbed her ears, while the test was running, and when I saw that she was positive, it just broke my heart. She was 2# 15oz, we assumed to be a young kitten--once examined, she has all permanent teeth, we're assuming now around 8 months. She is just the sweetest baby girl, we're calling her Nina, and if we can get her back to health, I'd love to give her a good chance, and I know Big Sid's would be best. Right now, my plan is to nurse her back to health, try to find a home for her locally, and she'll need retested at the end of January/beginning if February. If she is still positive and we haven't found her a home, I'd love to give her the great life that you and Big Sid's provide if any room becomes available. If there's any chance of putting me on the list, it'd be so appreciated."
And then before I could reply...."I hate to add on...This morning, Nina's sister was found sitting alone and meowing in the same spot Nina was found. We're calling her Pinta--she's in slightly better condition, but tested positive for feline leukemia as well. If we could bring Nina, I'd love to bring them together--as soon as we put Pinta in the cage, Nina went right up and was headbutting and rubbing against her, welcoming her to the warmth. It was like she missed her all night, it was great to see them reunited! I know two cats, again, is a lot to ask. And if they were accepted, we wouldn't want them to go for quite a while so we can make sure they both get healthy, spayed, vaccinated, and we would try to find them a home too--which may be easier since they're two super sweet sisters! Just wanted to mention as something to keep on the back burner. I look forward to hearing from you later. Happy holidays!"
Of course I said yes, that I would but the sisters on our waiting list, and wouldn't ya know it, just four days later, here is Sarah again: "Jen, I'm not sure what the chances of this are...but Nina and Pinta have two new mates, Santa and Maria. They were found earlier today in the same location as the girls just waiting...Santa is quite a bit bigger and the only male, and Maria is a beautiful, yet timid girl. They both tested positive for FeLV as well. Our doctors think he is the girl's littermates, we wern't sure if Santa was dad or brother at first, but we think brother--he's small for an intact male, but bigger than the girls.
I know it's a lot to ask to take in a whole family of FeLV kitties, but I guess that is what I'm asking...They're all very special. I'm doing everything I can to get donations for them and Sid's Kids, especially because I know this is a huge favor. Pinta is really blossoming, I think you'll get a kick out of her. Santa is a huge doll baby too, always rolling on this back and he still has a high pitched baby meow. Nina is a bit reserved...she likes to just rest and when you pet her she'll slowly fall over for a belly scratchin', like she's hypnotized, but normally by that point Pinta is walking on her so she can get the loving too. I'm anxious to see Maria's personality--she's still very cautious in her new environment, but she has a precious little meow. (Maria turned out to be the mom of the trio). If at all possible, we'd love to admit all 4 of them into Big Sid's--Let me know what you think or what I can do to help make this happen for them! "
And when I told Sarah we would take all four at once, she was thrilled, and offered up an update on the troops prior to their arrival: " Nina, Pinta, Santa and Maria are doing well. Santa is a doll baby, his personality
