Focus on Ferals, a local Trap-Neuter-return program in Grand Rapids comes across many a nice, tame cat in their line of work, so when they get an FIV- or Feleuk-positive one that is a candidate for our program, they hold on to the cat until we have an opening. Such was the case with a most handsome fella TNR'd back in November 0f 2010. Baxter, born in January of 2009, came to us on January 11th, 2011, as we had adopted out 5 of our Sanctuary cats and finally had room to take several more deserving cats in. When this darling FIV-positive, 8-pound boy came to me, I was immediately taken by how cute he is, sporting only 1/3rd of a tail and one of the sweetest faces around. But I was dismayed to find out that he was terribly anemic, and in need of some serious medicating with steroids and antibiotics if I had hopes of reversing his anemia. I routinely run lab work on all of our Sanctuary transfers so I know exactly what we are dealing with; thankfully I caught his issue in time and got down to business. From the moment he stepped into Big Sid's, he was winning hearts and making friends. He has an easy-going, laid-back manner that may be in part due to his not feeling quite up to par yet, but I also believe that this cat is just so happy to be indoors and well-fed, his every need tended to, that he is just one happy camper. :) I have to be honest in saying that I tend to fall the hardest for those that I have to devote my time and energy to, the ones with medical issues I hope to cure. Nothing is more satisfying to me that taking an ill animal and making him all better; basic, but my motivation. :) I am thankful I am getting the chance to give Baxter the best life possible!
