Domestic Short Hair - Black - Drumstix - Large - Adult - Male
On January 13th, 2012, Dr. Wendy Swift of Ottawa Animal Hospital contacted me in regards to an extremely friendly fella she came across that tested positive for Feline Leukemia. A client of hers, who is a wildlife rehabilitator, had befriended this guy months before, and was caring for him outdoors until the news came back he was carrying the virus. Now our waiting list to get a cat into our sanctuary is typically a mile long and months until an opening arises, but luck was on their sides as one of the rescuers on our list gave up their spot to Wendy and Rebecca's boy, given the fact he wasn't able to be housed indoors. Here is the email from Rebecca detailing her time with this beloved black boy:
"My name is Rebecca and I am the caretaker of "silly boy" Styx. He seen Dr. Swift last week and tested positive for Feline Leukemia. I was so broken hearted because I had an awesome home for him already set up, and she her only requirement was to make sure he was negative before introducing him to her other cats. Now we are both broken-hearted, although we understand this is not a death sentence for him, we didn't know where he could go...
I believe he turned on his charm with Dr. Swift to make the call to you for a possible place for him(he's REALLY good at that) and I am so thankful that you have decided to take him! I have been to your website and viewed the "kitty cam" and your outstanding kitty rooms with all the steps, lounge areas, over looks, etc. What love and thought you put into your sanctuary! I am just blown away! SO KITTY COOL!
He came to us as a stray. I am a wildlife rehabber and he was just hanging out by my release cage one morning. I always have puppy food out for the raccoons, and he was very thin, so I brought him his own dish of cat food. He was very happy with that, and I was fine to have him hang out, as long as it was outside. Well, as it started getting colder, he started coming in the house through our dog door, begging for more food. We already have 5 house cats/2 dogs, and although we allowed him to come and go, we knew we had to find him a good home, which we did. But now I am back to square one, AND he's positive, AND I have to protect my other kitties, BUT I refuse to just have him put down, as I believe he came to me for a reason. He never has had any problems with our dogs nor any of our cats (even the old ornery nes). Anyways, I could go on and on about him, but I just wanted to contact you about setting up a time to meet, and to thank you for what you do!"
So on January 15th, two year old Drumstix, came to be a formal Sids Kid! initially he was named Styx, a play on words given then fact he was skinny and scrawny when he first arrived, and his twig legs resembled drumsticks. But when I met him he was happy and healthy and quite a chubby little bird, so I added to his moniker to better represent the fella he was now:) I can tell you without a doubt that he is simply one of the silliest, goofiest, most joyful fellas we have at Sids; he oozes exuberance and ebullience and simply makes me smile every single time I lay eyes on him. he is, in one word, spectacular (or dare I say...spec-cat-ular?!) Feleuk virus be damned, Drumstix doesn't know he harbors it, so we aren't about to burden him with that. He loves life to the fullest, wants to experience all that he can and have a ball while he is doing it, so our game plan is to allow him to be all that he chooses to be while he is with us. and maybe, one fine day, we will be fortunate enough to give this beautiful boy a home of his very own; that would be the end-all, be-all for him, and music to our ears!
